The calculation used in this calculator follows the general guidelines, which vary by dog size, as follows:
- Small Dogs: For small dog breeds, the guideline often used is:
- The first two years of a dog's life count as 12 dog years each.
- After the first two years, each additional year counts as 4 dog years.
- Medium Dogs: For medium-sized dog breeds, the guideline is similar but with slightly different multipliers:
- The first two years of a dog's life count as 10.5 dog years each.
- After the first two years, each additional year counts as 4 dog years.
- Large Dogs: For large dog breeds, the guideline differs again:
- The first two years of a dog's life count as 9 dog years each.
- After the first two years, each additional year counts as 5 dog years.
